(The Devil’s Revolver #2)
Publication date: April 2nd 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Welcome to the birthplace of the Devil’s Revolver, where untold danger lurks for Hettie Alabama and her companions…

The second book in the epic, magic-clad Devil’s Revolver series follows Hettie and her sister south of the Wall into Mexico, where they must unmake Hettie’s infernal mage gun while confronting a magic- and land-hungry army and a monster from hell drawn to the powers of the weapon. Hettie wants nothing more than to break her bond to the cursed Devil’s Revolver and find a way to keep her sister safe — but Abby’s indigo powers are growing stronger, and in the gated, walled village where they take refuge, nothing is exactly as it seems. Pursued by the Pinkertons, left without allies or guardians, Hettie has to rely on her own grit and determination to do the right thing, no matter the cost.

This second installment of V. S. McGrath’s sweeping and high-stakes saga draws its truly unforgettable gunslinger heroine to her limits and ends with a satisfying bang.

INTERVIEW

  1. What’s your favorite color?

Red.

  1. What have you learned today?

That hiding Halloween chocolate in the sofa cushions is a bad idea.

  1. What was your favorite subject in school?

English. We studied one of Shakespeare’s plays every year, and I really enjoy them.

  1. What are some of your favorite movies?

The Star Wars films (minus the prequels). Most of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, especially Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle. I still go back to the first Marvel’s Avengers movie as a sick-day watch, too.

  1. What kind of music are you into?

I have eclectic tastes. Some of my favorite artists include Pink, The Killers, Aimee Mann, and Lake Street Dive, but I write to a lot of classical or soundtrack music.

  1. What’s one of the scariest things you’ve ever done?

In high school, I asked a guy to tell me outright he wasn’t romantically interested in me so that I wouldn’t waste my time pining over him anymore.

  1. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Publishing my first book, Her Son’s Hero, with Harlequin.

  1. How did you meet your spouse?

We worked at a big chain bookstore together in the magazine section. At one point we ended up reshelving the sex books section. I asked him out and the rest is history.

  1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Growing up reading all of Beverly Cleary’s books, I declared at age eight that I wanted to be an author. Glad I stuck with it!

  1. How did you get into writing?

I started writing fanfiction for a TV show called Avatar: The Last Airbender. I got a lot of great feedback, and I learned a lot of the basics of writing by playing in someone else’s world. I was regularly publishing 40,000-to-65,000-word multichapter stories. When I started working in publishing, I decided to try my hand at writing a romance novel. It took three years to publish that first book. I haven’t stopped writing since.

  1. What do you do for fun?

Crochet. Shop. Go to art galleries and museums.

  1. If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go?

Just one? I’d love to tour France and Italy, Japan and China.

  1. Who are some people you’d like to meet someday?

I’d love to meet the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Bryan Konetizko and Mike DiMartino. I’d love to sit in on a writers’ room discussion on all my favorite TV shows, too, like Jane the Virgin, Killjoys, Wynonna Earp, Star Trek Discovery, Westworld…I could go on and on.

  1. If someone asked you to give them a random piece of advice, what would you say?

Invest in your retirement savings. Buy in bulk. And spend the extra money on good socks and underwear.

  1. What’s one of your favorite habits you have?

I have a fairly strict nighttime shower/get ready for bed routine that takes about an hour. It helps me decompress and wind down from the day. No screens or other distractions—just me and an elaborate washing and moisturizing regimen.
