Stacey Rourke
(Unfortunate Soul Chronicles, #2)
Publication date: March 29th 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Mirror, mirror on the wall.

What’s behind that fated call?

He’s the seer of present, future, and past,

Yet remains a nameless face entombed in glass.

Raised as a servant in the underwater kingdom of Atlantica, Alastor worked his way up to a regal member of the Royal Guard. Only as a decorated soldier did he stand a chance of winning the hand of the woman he’s loved since childhood … Poseidon’s only daughter, Princess Vanessa. But, when the war against humans rages, dark magics are evoked to give the mermen a fighting chance. Temporarily granted legs, they charge from the sea into a doomed battle.

Doing the bidding of his masters as a trusted pawn,

The claims of his loyalty couldn’t be more wrong.

Waking on land, with bodies all around, Alastor’s lone goal becomes returning to the ocean and the only life he’s ever known. A plan that is quickly diverted when Hades, Lord of the Underworld, appears with a twisted agenda all his own. Cast to a land far from the lapping comforts of home, Alastor’s sole companion is a troubled misfit named Sterling that soon comes to depend on him. Trained to be a hero, how far is Alastor willing to go to return to the woman he loves? And can he live with the sacrifices he’s forced to make?

Each day he schemes to break free from their thrall,

and honor a self-made vow … to kill them all.

inspiration behind the book/series

I love fairy tales, and I’m huge Disney fanatic. Both allow people of all ages to once again capture the wonder of youth, where anything is possible, and magic really exists. In that mindset, the Unfortunate Soul Chronicles were born. Many authors throughout the years have taken on adaptions of the classics. For my series, I wanted to take a look at the characters we all love, but they often considered “side-liners” story wise. For once, I wanted to bring them to center stage!

First up, and my very inspiration for the series, was the villainous sea witch we know as Ursela. (Spelling changed for copyright reasons.) In the movie The Little Mermaid, Ursela mentions she was banished from the kingdom of Atlantica, but we never learn how or why. Who doesn’t love a good backstory? In Rise of the Sea Witch we travel to the depths to find out how once exalted Princess Vanessa becomes the dastardly villain will all know and love. Full of gods and goddesses, intrigue and betrayal, this twisted tale is no sweet Disney version!

The inspiration for Entombed in Glass comes from a question I’ve often wondered about involving the Magic Mirror. How did he end up there? A curse? A voluntary decision? He seems to know so much yet is forever trapped in glass. Or … is he?

Where, then, will the series go from there? Down the rabbit hole, my friends! In Book three we will learn more about the Cheshire Cat. What could possibly have happened to turn a man into a mad and manic feline that “Isn’t all there?” This one will be a crazy ride! It’s a journey to Wonderland I can’t wait to take with my readers!

While these are the main characters of each story, plenty of other fairy tale beings make cameo appearances! Be on the look out for Flotsam and Jetsam, Hades, Calypso, Snow White, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and more! Whether you are in the mood for fairy tale magic, action and adventure, or some deep belly laughs. This is the series for you!
