The man was standing, but then hunkered down, but not to sit in his seat. He bent his large frame and now was on his knees. Correction: one knee.
I wasn’t an expert, but it looked to me like…he was proposing. The woman stood, her head down, tears probably running and all that reddish dark hair still flying in the cold autumn wind. I saw her hands tremble. Then I saw his hands. In one hand was the ring, a tiny sparkler lit by the ballpark lights.
In his other hand was a green lucky rabbit’s foot. Mine. Before it was mine. Because it was his.
It was 1996 and my 20-year-old father’s hand was shaking. He was wearing out the fur piece. It was all on the line for him.
“Madeleine Walker, love of my life, will you marry me?” he shouted above the roar of the crowd. She was one seat away from me.
Mom. Oh, Mom.
“Yes, yes, yes, yes!” she cried, throwing her arms around him. He stood lifting both of them to their feet. The moon caught something silvery and I memorized the two tears that slipped down my father’s cheek.
I’m not sure how I started talking to my newly engaged parents, but forces conspired. The kid went to the john; I slid over. And Daniel moved next to me. My father was the closest to me, inches away, and he was always the friendly type. He turned and smiled at us.
Did he know? Did he feel it? “I’m your daughter,” I wanted to scream.
